Wedding Cake Trends for 2014

Wedding cakes have come a long way over the last century and gave evolved into glorious works of art that reflect exactly what the vision or personality is of the happy couple. These sugar masterpieces are often the focal point of the reception so it is important for many couples to use the cake to make a statement or create an atmosphere for the event. The most impactful designs are ones that are unique and one of a kind as well as absolutely delicious. You want your guests to talk about your cake with longing and admiration.

Thanks to many advances in technique and medium there is pretty much nothing that talented experienced cake designers can't do for a bridal couple. Even relatively new designers can pull off fabulous cakes using cutters, texture boards and flower punches. This means that the wedding trends for 2014 are textured, colored and very romantic.

Here is what you will see at receptions in 2014:

Painted cakes: This look was something that was also popular in 2013 but now covers new ground. These creative cakes are sometimes very precise with stenciled designs and even monograms or they can be utterly unique creations with freestyle painted flowers, butterflies or clouds. The most incredible part of painted cakes is that they have absolutely no limits for a talented designer. You can also have painted cupcakes or cookies as well!

Classic flowers and flower combinations: Certain combinations will always be popular because they are absolutely glorious and have been used to denote romance and love for centuries. Roses in all their variations and sizes will be found gathered on cakes in 2014. From delicate wild roses to full blown beauties these flowers will be made from gum paste or put on fresh. Roses will also be combined with other flowers such as hydrangea, freesia and even daisies depending on the bouquet and theme of the event.

Texture such as ruffles and lace: cakes are unapologetically romantic and girly in the coming year. They are draped in intricate fondant lace created with Sugarveil and plumped up with pretty staggered ruffles in all colors. Sometimes both these texture elements are used one one cake. Ruffles can spiral, flounce down or up depending on the design and they can also be monochromatic or alternated colors. You will also see cakes inspired by fabrics like damask and heavy silk, often from the wedding dress itself. Look for lots of texture.

Ombre: although the ombré hair trend has seemed to fizzle out cakes are still sporting this subtle look. This gradual fade to lighter shades is best on taller cakes and can be achieved with tinted fondant or even with hundreds of flowers or other design elements like buttons or shells. Simply place the flowers in gradually lighter shades either up or down the cake. This is quite an elegant look.

Make a Wedding Heirloom Table Runner

When my friend Jeanine Caron married her British boy, Joe, I knew I had to have something special to offer the newlyweds. As it happened, I had a set of four vintage napkins that had been in Jeanine’s Montreal apartment, which she gifted to me before she moved house to London. (She gave them to me because I loved them so much, so only two went into this runner. Two are still with me!)
As it happens, I knew just the person to help me incorporate this sentimental textile into an heirloom linen:  Maya Donenfeld. As Maya says, “I love taking something old and transforming it into something fresh and new.”

Jeanine and Joe’s table runner features rescued coffee sacks on either end. The heavy weight keeps it in place and minimizes the likelihood of a breeze sweeping it up at an outdoor event. Burlap, a rustic and humble fabric, balances out the more decorative middle. Its durability and strength anchor the runner symbolically, as well as aesthetically. The focal point of the runner is a vintage linen piece that was once a part of a trousseau. The blue embroidery echoed the napkins’ blue floral fabric perfectly; the fact that it was replaying its original role as wedding linen felt just right.
As you gather elements for your project, consider using a ribbon from a mother’s wedding dress, a scrap from a grandmother’s favorite apron, or cherished vintage napkins from a dear friend, as we did in this case.

Fabulous Wedding Colors 2014

If you are getting married next year then you should know the 2014 wedding color trends. This will help you in planning your wedding and creating a look that will be memorable. A friend of mine who will get married next year and she asked me a couple of weeks ago what the wedding color trends for 2014 will be. I began doing a lot of research and will be happy to share the results with you guys.

NAVY BLUE

Pink theme weddings have always been very popular and they can be done in new, exciting, and classy ways, and can be the element that makes your wedding decorations beautiful.

SHADES OF PINK

Gray has become a surprisingly popular color for weddings in the last couple of seasons, and this trend is forecast to continue for 2014 weddings. There are many colors which can be paired with gray, some intuitive and some more offbeat; these are some of the most lovely gray wedding color palettes.

GREY

This trend gained popularity within the past two bridal seasons with brides pairing soft colors with neutral brown; now we are now seeing more adventurous color schemes for 2014 weddings.

NEUTRALS

Those water colors or other bright colors will be one of the hottest wedding colors in the year 2014 and aqua if of course included.

AQUA

Whether you’re looking to add a splash of color to your ceremony or liven up your tables cape, coral is the perfect hue that is so captivating and versatile.

Wedding DIY Favors: Bellini Petal Lollipops

The beauty of wedding flowers isn’t limited to bridal bouquets: you can easily share blooms with your guests in lollipop form! To make these truly toast-worthy treats, flavor with champagne and peach candy oils to emulate the delicious flavor of a Bellini cocktail.
I chose mini pink rose petals and fresh mint as the inclusions for these pops, but you can use most any edible flower – provided it has a pleasant taste. Remember, just because a flower is non-poisonous does not mean it is also delicious.

Here’s my list of edible flowers that are accessible and tasty:
Basil
Chamomile
Johnny-jump-ups
Lavender
Marigolds
Pansies
Roses
Violas
Violets

7 Hot Trends for Weddings in 2014

1. 2014 is the year to get spicy. Elizabeth reports that brides are over the moon for heat on the menu. “We using a lot of Calabrian chili oil, a lot of sriracha — and are seeing guests reach first for the spicy things on the menu.”

2. The favorite service style to capture this year’s approachable elegance? While the waiters might be wearing black dinner jackets and white gloves, they’re presenting food family style. “It’s more interactive when everyone helps themselves,” says Morris Kitchen's Karina Seljak.

3. In 2014, your cake will shine! Cheryl Kleinman of Betty Bakery says the look ranges from a fairy dusting of very fine glitter on the top tiers, to wild disco ball sparkle.

4. "Right now flavor is very driven by season," explains Cheryl. In the summer, choose a lemon cake with lemon flavor. In the winter, brides are looking for chocolate cakes with rich accents of mocha or praline.

5. Music that fits your theme. New York society bandleader Alex Donner says his clients are requesting music to go along with wedding themes ranging from films (The Great Gatsby) to locales (like France — all songs were performed in French!).

 6. The element of surprise. Stick to songs that your guests know and love but mix up the musical styles. "Think a bluegrass band playing ‘Hava Nagila’ or a string quartet playing Coldplay," says bandleader Amber Gustafon.

7. Looking for a chic wildcard idea? Forgo reception favors altogether for a “pillow present,” a little welcome gift left for guests at their hotel. Who doesn’t want to arrive from a big trip to find milk and cookies, or wake to a breakfast surprise of scones and local jam?

7 Hot Wedding Trends for 2014

Hey there, lucky bride! A new year is nearly here, ushering in a new swoon-worthy wedding season. We went up and down the coasts talking to wedding experts and everyone agrees: 2014 will be the year of true romance. Weddings are going softer, sweeter, lusher and more heartfelt. It’s a return to classic chivalry, to the things that made our mothers cry, and it’s happening just in time for you to melt hearts and make memories.

1. Pink is back! Do you already feel like a blushing bride? Carry that sweet love over to your color scheme. It’s the nudes, the blushes, the peaches — not Pepto Bismol pink!

 2. The return to romance ushers in a new love for the formality of days gone by. Think white-gloved waiters and big band dancing, crystal candlesticks and gold-rimmed china. One major bridal inspiration for the return to tradition comes from Hollywood. It’s the look of ‘The Great Gatsby. Her brides are still falling hard for the bubbly, approachable elegance of the Roaring Twenties.

 3. Pattern is making a new play but throw out the hard-edged looks. Chevron was big last year but now I’m seeing trellis-patterns, bold stripes and florals.

4. Lush, soft, Exquisitely romantic — the flower of the year is the many-petaled tree peony, says New York’s Ariella Chezar, whose work has been seen at the White House. Amber Gustafson of Los Angeles’s Amber Events picks a similar bloom — the sweet-smelling garden rose. Find out which flowers are in season for your wedding here.

5. The flower garland is back in a big way. Ariella loves citrus garlands for bars and over doorways — lemons, limes, oranges on the stem. “And fern garlands are really beautiful. I love them down the center of a long table.”

6. Adorable little freehand illustrations will adorn invitations everywhere this year.

7. And in the sweetest trend of all, invitations this year are getting small. The most requested look is for an invitation smaller than the standard 5x7 — something little, dainty and infinitely precious.

5 Easy Cost-Cutting Moves for Your Wedding

A beautiful celebration can be yours for less than you think. Here are some smart budget saving strategies.

The Guest List
Keeping your guest list trim is one of the most important things you can do for your wedding budget. If you are worried that you will offend people by not inviting them, stop now. Of course you wouldn't leave out your nearest and dearest, but think of all those people who would be pleased to be invited but not bothered if they aren't. The best thing to do is to make some rules. That is, first cousins but not second. Spouses and live-in or serious partners (usually 6 months is the rule of thumb) but not dates. Your boss but not the whole office. That being said, don't split up groups - if you invite the whole office, fine - but don't just invite one.

The Dessert Table
Unless you are having a dessert reception, don't go overboard on sweets. Wedding cakes are so spectacular that offering a dessert buffet, a crepes stations, and mini ice cream sundaes is just excessive.

The Flowers
It is no surprise that over the top florals can add up your wedding costs quickly. You don't need to fill every corner of your venue with flowers for a lovely look. Work with your florists to use the freshest, in-season blooms to their advantage, then fill in the rest with budget-friendly candles or greenery. The look will still be beautiful. If you really adore flowers, consider a botanical garden as your venue - a beautiful backdrop is guaranteed.

Cocktail Hour
Don't overload guests with everything from sushi bars to hors d'oeuvres to pasta and carving stations. By keeping it short and sweet, you'll ensure you will need less food. Go for hand passed hors d'oeuvres instead of having stations. Only offer enough food to keep your guests from getting tipsy during your cocktail hour.

The Drinks
Feel free to skip the champagne toast and use the wine you have on the table. Create a bar that you can afford, whether that means only beer, wine and soft drinks; a signature cocktail and wine with dinner; or less-expensive liquors for mixed drinks. Keep it simple. The more variety the more expensive it will be.
