Weddings and Technology

Besides slideshows, how are couples integrating technology into their weddings?

From the International Panel of Wedding  Planners and Designers:

Before the actual wedding day, couples are using technology in a number of ways.  Most couples are now building wedding websites to streamline where and how information is distributed. Additionally, many couples are now using Pinterest to put together their ideas and concepts in order to more efficiently and effectively communicate their vision to their team of collaborators.

Once the wedding day arrives, many couples are creating dedicated hashtags for their wedding, so that they are more easily able to find their family and friend's photos from their wedding on instagram and twitter.  Additionally, newly weds are often posting wedding albums to facebook days (or mere hours) after their weddings have taken place.

Playlists using Ipods and spotify are very popular instead of using a DJ, instagram for instant images of the wedding across twitter and Facebook. Couples creating their own wedding websites for guests information as well as wedding invitations.

Instagram is the latest craze to promote the wedding while it's happening. Creating signage that indicates the #hashtag to use so guests can participate in promoting wedding photos. We are also seeing Pinterest being used for wedding party collaboration in the planning process. Closes the gap between family members that live all over the world.

Technology plays a very important part in the wedding planning because for most couples, it’s an integral part of their daily life.  It’s standard practice to use the web to research, find and purchase products and services – wedding invitations, party favors, accessories and even bridal gowns.  Couples are also setting up wedding web sites and registries online and using social media to communicate with family and friends.

Pinterest and other image sharing web properties help couples research and share everything wedding.  Some couples use video streaming to share their wedding ceremony with those that are not able to attend.

An exciting new way to use technology is instantly sharing Photo Booth images via social media.  Computer generated images projected on the aisle during the ceremony and on the dance floor during the reception are on my list of favorites – these capabilities are made possible and affordably by technology.

The most common request is couples wanting to broadcast their ceremony on Skype, so family & friends who can't attend are able to share in their special day.

On one occasion, a couple had iPads on each table, which provided guests with details such as the evening's itinerary, menu, and entertainment.  They also had information about each guest at the table and how each knew the bride & groom.  Guests could also use it to record personal messages and take photos throughout the evening, sharing them on Facebook & Twitter.  It was fun and interactive.

One of our client couples recently shared a mini- cinematic film prior to their introduction into their reception . The film highlighted how they met, dated, and proposed. The bride had an amazing dramatic flair and sharp wit which when combined with her stage experiences resulted in a comedic and heartfelt film.

Past clients have also incorporated technology through live simulcasts of their ceremonies with family overseas, flipbook stations via The Flipbook People, photo sharing through Wedding Snap, personal wedding websites, same day video edits, and choreographed lighting for reception events just to name a few.

Spirit Board Halloween Party Invitations

Wow! Believe it or not, it's only the first week of September and Halloween invitations are already flying of the shelves. I'm not sure why I am surprised though, my youngest (she started 5th grade this morning) has decided that she is 'too old' to go trick or treating this year, and instead she would like to have a party - so we started planning about a week ago ourselves. With that in mind - what was the most popular Halloween invitation last week?

This cool and fun elegant Halloween design called, Spirit Board Halloween, has a lightly grunged parchment graphic background. This is a nod to a Spirit Board, also called a Ouija Board. At each corner there is a vintage filigree embellishment in black. In the upper left corner there is an antique style celestial sun graphic and a coordinating moon graphic in the upper right corner. At the top it says Happy Halloween and yes and no. There is a planchette at the top that points to the 'yes' because what guest would say no to a party like this? Your text goes in the middle. This would be great for any Halloween or masquerade party! Great for kids or teens.

Have you started planning for Halloween yet? What is your favorite tradition?

Let's Talk: Halloween Weddings

Fall is quickly approaching and you have decided to dispense with all of the conventional notions of what a wedding should be. It is about time. It is your day, and should be what you want it to be, so let us get creative. Now I assume that you have dug up a groom, and he agrees to the Halloween Wedding. Your Prince of Darkness should be willing to pitch in with the planning and execution of the ceremony. If he is not, kiss another frog.

1. Location is everything. Your choice should be the perfect backdrop for your ceremony. While there are chapels in Las Vegas that specialize in themed weddings, you may want to look for something a little closer to home. Many historic or Victorian mansions take on a mysterious air after dark. There should be more than a few in your area that are available for weddings. It is important to check availability well in advance of the wedding, and do a full tour of the facility.

2. Clergy. This could be a problem since some religions are opposed to the celebration of Halloween. If you run into this problem I suggest a non-denominational officiant. Your local phone directory or the Internet will help you to find the perfect person to preside over your unholy union.

3. The decorations. DROP THE PLASTIC SKULL, AND BACK AWAY SLOWLY! Think classy, not tacky. Iron candelabras, burgundy velvets, wreaths of autumn leaves, and blood red roses will get you started.

4. Your invitations. If you are going for a heavier fall influence, check out my fall wedding invitations at http://www.zazzle.com/noteableexpressions/gifts?cg=196257522018453313&rf=238936391098336092. For the truly undead look to my Gothic wedding invitations at http://www.zazzle.com/noteableexpressions/gifts?cg=196939876300544372&rf=238936391098336092 . If you can't find what you are looking for contact me and we can design the perfect invitation together!

5. When wording the invitations, be sure to inform the guests that it is a costume or Gothic event. Just in case someone shows up without one, make sure you offer a selection of masks. These can be found at your local dollar store around Halloween, or from vendors like Oriental Trading Company all year.

6. You may want to describe the reception as a costume or a masquerade ball to be sure that your guests get the point.

7. Your Hallowedding attire: If you want to be cheesy, stop reading. It is very important to summon your inner goth. She knows that you can't buy your wedding gown in the Wal Mart costume section. Exactly how far are you willing to go for the spirit of Halloween? I suggest dropping the word 'costume' from your vocabulary and head directly to www.milieux.com for so many options that you will actually feel your pulse...

8. For his attire, look into www.theaesthetik.com (the corset coat and corset vest are HOT!), www.arcanelore.com (not for the faint hearted dark prince) , or www.darklinks.com . Whatever you do, make sure that he knows that Bela Lugosi is not, repeat NOT, an option.

9. For the wedding party, you may want to leave them to their own devices, or Bridezilla, you can simply have full creative control. Red or black gowns for your attendants, and tails for his groomsmen.

10. For realistic accessories, check out www.vampfangs.com . In addition to fangs, they carry a large selection of Manic Panic makeup. Hot Topic is a great source as well, and you just might be able to find all of your Gothic accoutrement there. Don't forget the black lace garter!

11. When considering the desired makeup effect, it is important to start practicing well in advance of the ceremony. This also applies to hair. While some think that the Bride of Frankenstein is hot, your fiancee may not feel the same. www.vamp.org will give you some fail safe tips, straight from the vampires fang.

12. The musical score for your wedding will set the perfect mood.

13. Talk to those in the know for advice. Many wedding planners are virtually useless in this situation. Remember, this is anything but the typical wedding. Go to www.halloweddings.com for some unique ideas from someone who has actually been a part of a Hallowedding.

14. Drinks. Another of my personal favorite things, just happens to be Vampire Wines. They are the perfect beverage accent to the Halloween Wedding. From the Dracula Syrah to the Dracula Zinfandel, this is simply a must have. www.wickedwinesonline.com offers Vampire Wines and other darkness inspired beverage choices. You can also discuss the possibility of ordering Vampire Wines by the case with your local liquor store manager. Or if you already have a favorite wine or beverage  - check out my wine labels at http://www.zazzle.com/noteableexpressions/gothic+wine+avery+labels&rf=238936391098336092.

15. Your Halloween Wedding cake should be appetizing, yet still reflect the mood of the evening. www.designsbydorian.com offers bat, crow, and skeleton cake toppers. I like the "Love Never Dies" topper. Gothic romance at it's finest. For wedding cake ideas, go to www.freedsbakery.com , or talk to your local baker. I suggest avoiding the orange and black routine.

16. Flowers are really up to the bride. A white Calla Lillies is classy, deep red roses are just the right amount of morbid, and for the truly disturbed, having your roses died black is always an option.

17. Your photographer should be experienced in Gothic photography. Because of the unique atmosphere and lighting, you don't want your pictures too bright, or too dark. Think candle light.

18. Hire a D.J. with a large selection of music for the reception. Be very specific about the mood that you want to create.

19. www.wedthemes.com has a few really great ideas for wedding favors, as does www.favorideas.com . I would use black net and red ribbon instead of orange for the net favors.

20. Consider adding special touches. Some traditions weddings include releasing doves, why not crows?

Whatever you have in mind, the sites that I have provided are a great place to start. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to plan the event, and BREATHE, it is only eternity.
